How often do you daydream? How often do you let your mind wander into new realms of possibility? The Queen of Hearts, citizen of Wonderland, proclaims,
“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”
Shaman Durek suggests imagining impossible things every day… because what seems impossible… may be entirely possible after all. The only dreams that are certainly impossible are the ones we never dream.
Just look at history— people flying through the air? Impossible! Having conversations with people on the other side of the world while in the comfort of your living room? Impossible!
When we let our imaginations soar and believe in wild and crazy dreams, it opens the window for inspiration to come shining through.
Imagining the Impossible
Imagination is the birthplace of possibility. It’s where sparks of inspiration grow into something magnificent and extraordinary. (Or a tiny bit of delight, an ordinary miracle, a brief and beautiful moment— inspiration shows itself in small ways, too.)
Just as stories start from imagination, so do our lives. What do you imagine for yourself? What are six “impossible” things that could happen for you?
Six “Impossible” Things That Could Happen To Me Today
- The man of my dreams shows up in my life— no Tinder matching required.
- Someone offers me money for my art.
- I gain 100 ideal and engaged followers today.
- I move into a beautiful home with a beautiful backyard.
- Someone cooks dinner for me tonight.
- My cravings for sugar completely and permanently disappear.
Try it! It’s harder than you think— we’re out of practice. (The Queen of Hearts would be disappointed.)
Whispers of the Heart
The truly powerful imaginings are those that you feel in your heart. These are the dreams that make your heart feel warmer or beat quicker or radiate outward…or maybe fill you with fear or excitement. These are your soul dreams.
I could imagine myself as president; however, I have absolutely no desire to be president of anything. I could imagine myself visiting every country in the world, but even though I love exploring new cultures, that idea rings hollow in my heart.
What I do imagine is spreading love and worthiness. I imagine selling cards with empowering and inspirational messages for friends to send each other. I imagine creating a membership site where women support and celebrate each other as they courageously choose to live radiantly authentic lives. I imagine providing inner city preschools with tools and strategies for healing trauma, supporting wellbeing, and promoting diversity.
Sitting where I am, these dreams feel nearly impossible— so far away. But they wouldn’t be in my heart if they weren’t possible for me.
Whispers from your heart wouldn’t be there if they weren’t possible for you, too.
What do you imagine for your life? What are the whispers in your heart?
Stepping Toward Infinity
Ask yourself, “What if?”
What if I could sell cards? What if I could create a thriving membership site? What if I could change the lives of inner city kids?
If I could… then I would. I would take action. I would begin…. Wouldn’t you?
Every impossibility begins with a tiny step toward making it possible.
What if….?
What if it were possible??? What would you do? How would you begin?
But don’t forget: Leave a little room for magic.
Your imagination doesn’t need to create every tiny detail. Leave some space for magic and mystery. Leave a window open for inspiration to enter. Believing something can happen doesn’t require knowing all the how. Let inspiration show you the way.
Cages Around Infinity
I can’t ignore the societal and systemic constraints that bind many of us. I’m not going to say that anything is possible because I don’t know that it is. Or maybe I can say that anything is possible – just very unlikely. I realize being a white woman with United States citizenship gives me many privileges not afforded others. So it’s easy for me to say anything is possible because I’ve been given many opportunities my entire life. I believe in the power of my imagination, but I’ve had the freedom to imagine without being forced to focus my energy on survival and without being held back by society. I am blessed in this regard.
Maybe “imagination makes us infinite” doesn’t mean that everyone can do everything. Maybe it means that we can all grow a little further, improve our lives a little more, dream a little bigger. From wherever we are, maybe all of us can go beyond our present circumstances, somewhere a little further out into infinity. (Or a lot further— the point is not to limit ourselves unnecessarily, but to acknowledge cages around us; perhaps these cages can be broken.)
Expanding into Infinity
What would happen if we all took a moment to wonder, “What if?” What would happen if we all explored other possibilities? What if I could get a more fulfilling job? What if I could have better relationships? What if I could stop feeling anxious?
Maybe if we all imagined, What if… we all might reach for a little more. Reach a little further. And become infinite.
