Your relationship with yourself is the foundation that everything else rests on. When you’re unsteady, everything else can feel like it’s on shaky ground, too. It takes time, love, and patience to build a relationship with yourself— but it’s soooo worth it.
Here are 17 practices you can use to start connecting more deeply with yourself:
1. Pay attention to your needs and desires. What do I need right now? What do I desire?
2. Focus on the inward and outward flow of your breath.
3. Spend 5 minutes before you begin your day to sit and tune into what you want to experience and create.
4. Pause and check in with yourself before committing to something.
5. Empower and support yourself with loving thoughts.
6. Move your body in a freeing, fun, nourishing way. This might look like dancing, walking, or stretching. Be present and feel the sensations that come from the movement.
7. Make time for the little things that fill your heart with joy.
8. Gaze into your own eyes. Sit in front of a mirror and look into your eyes for a full minute. Cultivate a feeling of love and appreciation— or acceptance and forgiveness, if that’s what you need.
9. Put your hands over your heart, take five deep breaths, and ask yourself, “What guidance do you have for me today?” Close your eyes and listen.
10. Explore the idea that you are a spiritual being having a temporary human experience. Consider your connectedness and oneness with all that is.
11. Be in nature. Put your toes in the grass or sand or dirt. Hug a tree. Explore the intricacies of a flower. Immerse yourself in the nature around you.
12. Feel your uncomfortable feelings. Allow the hurt to flow through you; let tears fall if they come. Listen to what these feelings are telling you.
13. Slowly perform a body scan. Close your eyes, begin at your feet, and move up your entire body, paying attention to how each part feels.
14. Give yourself nourishment: sleep, water, fresh air, vegetables. Honor your body by taking care of it.
15. Make time for solitude, and give yourself permission to spend that time however you please.
16. Let your body’s wisdom guide you. When something is right for you, your body may soften, feel lighter, or feel expansive. When something isn’t right for you, your body may contract, stiffen, or feel heavy. Check in with your body when making decisions.
17. Journal daily about whatever’s on your mind and whatever emotions you’re feeling. See what flows from your stream of consciousness writing.
I hope some of these ways to connect more deeply with yourself resonated with your heart! Which one would you like to practice today?
